Osprey Diary 21st July

What a morning!  Our lone chick on the nest is a picture of misery- bedraggled!  Their juvenile plumage is pretty waterproof ( though not as good as say a ducks) and they are pretty good at thermoregulation now, but you can’t help but feel sorry for it! At least the chicks got a good meal last night and this morning so they should be fine- like all of us they will just have to wait out the rain until sunny skies tomorrow!

 More news later today!

Emma Rawling

  5pm update:

Ok so I know I said we appreciated the rain, but this is getting ridiculous!  What a downpour- it makes you very grateful for the fact that this weather has arrived now and not back when our wee ones were downy and vulnerable, or even worse, when mum was ill and unable to protect them. As it is, the chicks  are soggy but undeterred! Both are sitting on the nest just now, being the epitome of ‘optimism’ where  the possibility of dinner being delivered is concerned. Emma

Oops! sorry! See now that one chick has, indeed got a good sized fish….the other chick is not happy though!

  2. Margaret McC says:

5.05 and Ginger-Head grabs the fish again . She will explode soon–I’m sure she could share !!

  3. C Corner says:

Guess the concept of sharing is just as difficult for young ospreys as it is with young children!! Have just seen a fish delivered and the scrabble to see which juvie would get it. Mantling and gerroff it’s mine!
They don’t look quite as drookit as the Loch Garten brood.
Weather forecast looks better for tomorrow!

  4. Susan McVey says:

I guess that is the Gutsy Fat Knacker, with the fish again.lol

  5. Pat Kelsall says:

for God’s sake let it have a bit you greedy ‘gannet’

  6. maggie says:

What a greedy blighter that Chick is, hate hearing the other one screaming for food. Still I guess that’s nature and we are just privileged to be able to watch, Thanks LOTL.

  7. Deirdre says:

Has number 2 had much in the way of a fish dinner today – every time I look in it is fatty at it she should certainly be nice and strong on migration! but I worry for the polite sibling.

  8. Jacqueline says:

Who can doubt Darwin – we have the evidence before our very eyes – and ears!

  9. karen A says:

I see that ‘Guzzle guts’ has the fish again!!!! Im amazed he/she hasn’t spontaneously combusted!! LOL xxx

  10. Wrinklie says:

Greedy guts stuffing her face again…

  11. Deirdre says:

Mum and Dad must know no. 2 isn’t getting any why don’t they bring in another fish pretty quick after the first one whilst no.1 has her mouth full? They both get fed that way.

    • ANN B says:

it takes a lot out of them to catch fish. Its not as easy as you think it is. It’d be like a fisherman catching a fish to demand.

  12. ANN B says:

not looking good for the owl chick. I fear the worst. Tomorrow we.ll know more.

    • Cas, Fife says:

Have you been in touch? Just read the diary but no update since they mentioned having it checked over but no owlet in nest box, really hope they look into fixing the prob of the ledge before something happens to the other girls, hope the 2 who are there will stay inside the box

    • Tina says:

I’ve been trying to work out what happened. She was apparently found upside down, altho I also read she fell off the shelf outside the box, also that she fell into the box. Do you know what happened,Ann? I am also worried about her. The older owlets have pushed and shoved her and I’ve also seen them standing and sitting on her at various times which is natural, apparently.

    • Rosie's Mum in Toronto says:

Accoring to BOT, they are checking it over which is normal. Hopefully it will be placed back in the nest soon.

    • Pam & Garry says:

OH DEAR ANN B. What have you heard about poor little owl chick?
I have been looking and can only see two large chicks, we were always concerned for
      the poor littleun!!!!

    • AnnS says:

Sorry to hear that. Watched them last night, three of them all huddled on the ledge……. & I thought of the three stooges……….followed by remembering the song’Three craws sat upon a wall’ (Just as well I can’t sing !!!!) Guess she must have got hurt I don’t know how far up they are. Such a shame. I like owls but not the screeching !!!!!!!

    • Pirjo says:

What has happened to the owl chick I thought it was doing ok?

    • Elaine Ellor (Bathgate) says:

Ann, what has happened to the third chick, I havent checked in on them for a few days.

    • Wrinklie says:

What happened to the owlet, I’ve only seen two in the box for a couple of days now?

  13. granny rosi and the grandkids says:

Did you see that? one chick pinched the bit of fish from the other.

  14. SusanK says:

Julie, I don’t know if you’ll read this but I’ll give it a go anyway! Don’t worry about the tears – let them come. They’ll dry up when you’re ready. (Been through that part so many times, but it never gets any easier.) I’m not sure if getting another rabbit or guinea pig as company would be a good idea quite so soon. That could cause problems as it isn’t Molly. Have you thought about trying a stuffed rabbit or animal? Maybe this would offer some comfort? Stay strong.

  15. Betty says:

Night before last saw little owl knocked off the shelf. I am 5 hours ahead of you. They all 3 sit on the ledge fine, with the little one in the middle, till they spot parent coming in with kill then the larger 2 flap their wings and the little one topples off. Such a shame. Feel like renting a bouncy castle to put underneath.

  16. Deirdre says:

He really deserves a nice big fat trout hope dad is out on Butterstone as I speak and no.1 is out of sight!

  17. nick gordon says:

Hi All, how about a “fix” of ospreyholics?! lol

  18. nick gordon says:

Nuphar hi, i trust you’re well? Near time for final checks on the microlites!! lol :-)

  19. joyce b says:

evening everyone was away all day yesterday so was just catching up on yesterdays blogs. To everyone who has lost a pet – just google Rainbow Bridge, its a poem that will tug the heart strings.

  20. granny rosi and the grandkids says:

both chicks on the nest now, mum has flown from her perch.

  21. Carolyn says:

Mum’s so protective isn’t she? She’s up on her perch chirruping away at an intruder while her youngster mantles down in the nest. Here comes the other chick, who flies in, then sinks to the ground as though it’s exhausted.

  22. granny rosi and the grandkids says:

Mum back on her perch, no fish

  23. granny rosi and the grandkids says:

    Mums flown off again

    • granny rosi and the grandkids says:

one chick flown off now too

      • granny rosi and the grandkids says:

Fish delivery, couldn’t see who brought it as another chick came along with the deliverer, chick on nest got it and is making sure she’s keeping it.

  24. Margaret McC says:

Couldn’t find your post Nuphar but it was good to see you yesterday all be it just in passing as you were tied up ( so to speak !! ).

  25. Betty says:

Apparently, reading the owl diary, the farmer has the littlest owl and holding it till an owl expert checks it over. Poor little thing.

  26. granny rosi and the grandkids says:

    It’s a biggy

  27. granny rosi and the grandkids says:

chick just flew off with remainder of fish in his tallon

  28. Sandra Clark says:

I seldom watch the webcam at this time of night, but have just come home and switched on to see Lady in the nest, and moving the egg around, but I am a bit worried as I notice she is twitching her head a lot, as she used to when she was ill. Is she OK do you think? I feel quite sad for her, all alone, but perhaps she is enjoying the peace and quiet. I hope so. Just love watching her.

    • E Rawling, Perthshire Ranger SWT says:

She is probably just shaking water out of her ears! Seriously though, she is very waterlogged after a few days rain and this behaviour is normal , Emma

    • Jess says:

I too watched this sequence, it looked as if she was trying to sit on the egg at one point and was then mantling over it…..how strangely poignant it all was, all alone with the lone egg, brought a tear to my eye.

  29. Chrissy Beahan says:

Called in friday going north tuesday coming south.Tuesday 1100 watched chick attempt 3 times to fish submerged in the water opposite the hide then back to the nest what a privilege.Conditions calm and sunny at the time unlike today.

  31. Elaine Ellor (Bathgate) says:

Good morning all. It’s looking a little drier up at the Loch today thankfully; one of the chicks flew onto the nest a minuet ago, I think the other one is close by, I can hear it calling in the background. Hope the little on get more of a fair share of the fish today, unlikely I know, but I live in hope. 4:30 now and that’s the chicks starting to call for their breakfast.

  32. Sheona S says:

Nothing happening on the nest at the moment. one juvie was there for a while but has flown off now. At least it doesnt look like its raining. That eternal egg is still there!!

Only seem to be 2 owl chicks in their box.

  33. Steff from Oz says:

Early morning sunshine bathing the loch and the trees – quite calm and no rain, one chick in the nest and Mum on her perch, surveying the scene.

Only two owl chicks, I’m afraid – does anyone know what actually happened ? I can believe that Fatty might have pushed it off the ledge – they were all out there Tuesday and yesterday he seemed to be lining up the other chick with a bit of hip and shove !!

  34. Jan(EC) says:

6.09am Oh what a beatufil sight (not a spelling mistake)..nobody on the nest on cam 1, but Lady on her perch in the GLORIOUS SUNSHINE on cam 2. It looks like it is going to be a good day for everyone to dry out and then do some Fishing and eating. Have a good day team and bloggers.

    • Jan(EC) says:

6.45, Saw a fish brought in by dad, and the teens had a bit of a skirmish with it, one won and the other took itself off onto mums perch, I had to check to make sure mum was still on the nest, is this a power thing? Mum (looking rather agrieved took off, only to come back a couple of minutes later, by which time the chick on the perch was gone, then followed mum back on the nest. Now both mum and other chick shouting for more food. Lovely to see this action before I go to work.

    Message to Wrinklie:

Your lovely picture and verse have been included in the book, would you like me to use your FB name at the foot of their page?

    • Wrinklie says:

      Hi Shirley
I feel very honoured and would be pleased to to have the Wrinklie attribute..
Please let me know when published..

  36. Cornelia Hanning says:

6.43 – somone is eating and is it chick no.2 – is it always the more voluable one, in defense against no.1?

  37. Barbara Ann says:

7Y delivered a fish a few minutes ago and one chick promptly grabbed it and started eating.

  38. Barbara Ann says:

  39. Cornelia Hanning says:

7.00 …..so does the mean then that chick no.1 had already fed and was not in earnest about taking said food of chick no.2? Mum is standing sentinel…..

  40. Steff from Oz says:

Mum and the two kids perched around the nest now, enjoying the sunshine andwaiting for breakfast, I guess.

  41. Susan McVey says:

    Good Morning All,
Just a quick post then I’m off.
Looks a better morning today with some sunshine, Mum’s calling Dad for fish and both chicks joining in.
Here’s hoping fish will be a bit more plentiful today, for all.
Right I’m off for now, will hopefully catch up when I’m on the train. Bye for now

    • nick gordon says:

Morning Susan, sounds like you’re a busy girl!! lol Where abouts in England are you?

      • Susan McVey says:

        Hi Nick, how are you?
I’m on the train as I speak, from Paisley heading to York, where I am meeting my Sister,as she is already down there just now, then driving to London, stay over night, then Head to Ramsgate in Kent, where we have Aunt, Uncle and cousins there.
My cousin is a promoter, and is promoting JLS, Madness, to name a few. He also promotes thing like Last night of the proms, Will young, Diversity etc. So we are having a weekend of concerts, JLS, Diane Vickers (britain’s got talent), Madness and I don’t know who else. So he gave us the VIP tickets, for nothing I might add, and we are staying with him for a few days. So I’m looking forward to it now. Didn’t get to my bed til 3am this morning, then up at 7am.
So I will have a couple of drinks for you, when I’m there.

  43. Cornelia Hanning says:

7.05 …..concerning the owlets – yes, only 2 in the box this morning, why in heavens name have they not made the ledge any wider??????? Does anyone know whether it is the biggest chick ( chick no.1/ the one that fell off the ledge in the beginning ) that’s the hapless soul on the ground each night, please? love the way the ones in the box are practising jumping on things as if it’s prey……. gotchaaaaaaa. And then how the feathers are beginning to change visibly, amazing how a few days alter the looks altogether, both are preening a lot just now…..not been able to watch so much as odd working hours of my other half make it difficult to watch between 10pm and 4am. Sorry O-Team about (mis)using this blog but one worries and there’s nowhere else……coming from the owlets back to the Ospreys is like coming home to a sensible family though, especially with the ever constant presence of the female at the helm so to speak.

    • ANN B says:

it was the youngest chick 2 nights running and as a consequence died of starvation. Thats what they’ve said.

  44. Chrissy Beahan says:

    TIME: 9,00am

It seems there is yet another intruder,, our boy flat on the nest and Lady on her perch alarm calling,,,,

Looks a nice sunny morning so far,,,

I hope all the Rangers and staff can wring themselves out for the new day,,,, I wonder with all the rain,, has the “WELL”,, filled up at all ????

  45. AnnS says:

Goodmorning every one. Fiona & Emma my sincere apologise for bothering you by asking ‘are the cameras down’ on Wed aft.. I was suffering from withdrawal symptoms, the blogs were out of sequence (a bit) and a man was coming to Dr. my pc and I needed to know ‘was it me was it you!’ I am embarassed to have bothered you with such trivia. So sorry. I really enjoy watching. and learning. One day I might get back up. Just wish I had known years ago that I could have witnessed all the happenings on web cam, although this year has been special in so many ways. I have read 2008 & 2009 blogs and comments. What a different life you lead now with so much feedback. All good though.
Saw Lady earlier (think it was her) in brilliant sunshine. Now one chick has been screaming after last fish disappeared…….all so quick !!!!! Now he pondering something…..is it the egg(what you doin there ) or is he hearing noises from the new dray? anyway have a good day and again thanks to you all for your work.

    • fiona, osprey HQ says:

The cameras were down Monday/Tuesday due to a power cut but as far as I’m aware we didn’t have any problems yesterday. Can you access it today?

      • AnnS says:

SORREEEEE !!!!! I did mean Tuesday. All Absolutely fine today…as is usual. Watching lady just now doing that coughing ‘thing’ and sometimes she has looked as though she is sneezing at times over past few days. Now she eating. great camera work….again Thanks

  46. Jill(E) says:

Is that Lady on her own on the nest tucking into a nice big fat fish? Not been on much the past few days as my desk has been buried in paperwork that my boss left me as he is now away for 2 weeks and our paths didn’t cross between my holiday and his! Looking forward to watching now though and seeing the competition between the chicks for food! I’ve read through 10 days of blogs – whew! what a carry on there’s been! Camera is now panning around searching for the chicks and dad I expect, meanwhile if it is our Lady there she’s having a good meal.
