Osprey Diary 23rd July

Another beautiful morning at Lowes with more sunshine and the happy sight of lady and her two youngsters on the nest, feeding happily.

Those of you who have been worrying about the smaller chick getting enough food, will be glad to hear it had a breakfast fish all to itself this morning at the crack of dawn! Nature’s survival of the fittest’ rule can be harsh, but in this case the wee one is getting enough to get by at the moment. However, it is certain that the bigger chick will be at an advantage, with extra fat reserves to call upon if times are hard. This may be particularly pertinent come migration time in a few weeks- although there is a great deal of luck involved in surviving your first trip to Africa for a young osprey, having a good bodyweight to start with will certainly help. Many of you will have also noticed the amount of intruder activity around the nest over the last week or so. This is not surprising really, given the timing of other young ospreys in nearby nests also fledging, and their parents also frantically trying to keep up with the demands of teenage mouths! The ospreys alarm calls you are hearing are not too serious (unlike earlier in the season when there was a serious risk to chicks etc) but more of a symbolic protest at the neighbours getting too close.Emma RawlingPerthshire Ranger

5.30pm update- we are desperately trying to get the cameras back up, sorry folks!

if the web cam is off i.ll have to watch Big Brother :-D

    • Ursula from France says:

It is more like that big brother is watching you. I read in the french paper that a man going to work in London is seen 230 times by big brother

Don’t stress Emma – us blog people CAN be patient. We can imagine the O family enjoying this wonderful sunshine. I guess you will have a busy weekend ahead of you. Do we need to book in for the walk on Thursday. I know Fiona booked me in but one of my friends wants to come as well.

    • E Rawling, Perthshire Ranger SWT says:

Thanks Em , I will put your name down to two on thursday. See you then, Emma

Still nothing poor team you should have gone home since an hour. Are you looking at the nest on your computer at home as well?

    Evening Team, and blog squad!
Susan, thanks for your comment re the poem, i’m blushing!! lol In all honesty poetry isn’t a regular thing with me, nor does it come particularly naturally – there’s a lot of paper gets crumpled and binned in the process! lol
Rather i have to think for a good while before i write, and i seem to find the same rhyming metre (is that the right word?) running in my head, so i’m limited!

Very much liked Margie’s poem, a big lump in my throat and a tear with that one – and also Elaine’s & Chrissie’s too!

To add (for what they may be worth) my thoughts to the format of the book, i found myself agreeing with the idea of a less expensive edition for quicker sales for the Visitor Centre certainly in the first instance – however, i’m not averse to the original idea of a “quality” edition should a publisher be willing to help, as i would certainly be intersted in that too. Many thanks btw to those who are active in making the book happen, Shirley, Carolyn, (if memory serves!)

Re the suggestion of limiting the entries, i would hate anyone’s efforts to be omitted, as there’s such a diversity of view points and subject matter which i think is so deserving of inclusion, but that’s just my thoughts! :-)

    • Carolyn says:

Nick, you’re the second person on the blog today to give me credit for someone else’s efforts! So, unless I have an alter ego doing all sorts of things behind my back, I have to decline your thanks!

    • Elaine Ellor (Bathgate) says:

      Nick.
Just read your post re the book, I think you right on the mark regarding the cheaper option as far as the Centre being able to sell them. But it would be nice to have the option of a better quality book, especially for the people whose poems are featured in the publication,

Nick: Can you email me please? I won’t put my email address in full as spammers may link to it but it is shirley(hyphen)davies(at)hotmail(dot)co(dot)uk

      Many thanks

Just heard on the news that here in Scotland, the number of poisonings of birds of prey has risen and is at it’s highest in 20 years. 20 Buzzards and the white tailed eagle that was gifted from Norway (I think). Do you think Lady could have been poisoned?

    • E Rawling, Perthshire Ranger SWT says:

Piosoning birds of prey is unfortunately still a problem, but it unlikelt to have been the cause of our Ladys illness. Ospreys are unlikely to ingest pioson bait as they only take live fish , unlike vulnerable carion eating species such as buzzards, kites and eagles. Emma

Do you know that the first time I will actually read all the beautiful poems from beginning to end will be the day that I purchase the book, sit down and relax. Now this doesn’t seem right but due to increase popularity of the cards and chatting incessantly on e-mails- I seriously don’t know where the time has gone. I am loving it, so keep em orders rollin in!! Love J xx May now even be a special one with kingfishers (winter scene) – now this should be good!!

MAY will give you ring over weekend. Jx
