Overnight Camera

Hi folks, sorry to again ahve to tell you that our osprey camera is down- it seems there is a problem with the internet service provider or router. We have tried everything we can think of to fix it tonight ( don’t these things always happen at 5pm on a  Friday!) but we may not be able to get it back up working until tommorrow ( Saturday) morning. Our apologies agian, and thankyou for your patience. Emma, Fiona and Rinchen.

    Thank you soooo much

Thanx for the heads up :) I was cursing my computer. Thanx too for all the hard work you all put in. This is my second full year of watching this nest and one of the first places I go when I log on.

Ah, technology. Gotta love it. We are entering a period of unusual sunspot activity for the next 2 or 3 years according to scientists who watch this sort of thing. Since it’s supposed to interfere with electronic communications, this sort of thing may be more likely to happen until the solar storms die down again. It’s an interesting theory anyway.

      Best regards until Saturday.

      • eileen Isle of Wight says:

We have an 11 year sunspot activity. When it’s at it’s highest, radio, as in amateur radio stations may be lost at certain times of the day, but others, elsewhere in the world, as well as what they call moonbounce, will be found.
Seeing that technolgy, has advanced so much, using satellite stations etc., It would not be sunspots causing all the problem.
I just think it’s the equipment, being so ‘cheap’ to instal, which is the problem, it seems never a day passes, when something happens. I still cannot view cam2 at night, as it’s just a massive blur, and cam1 is so dull, that I can see BIRDS on the nest, would not be able to id them as ospreys.

  3. Pat (Wellbank) says:

Thats fine as I wondered what had happened.

  4. nick gordon says:

Thanks for the update, as frustrating as it is, we know it’s not your fault! And as ever, we appreciate your input :-)

  5. ANN B says:

nothing you can do about it. We can wait til tomorrow. I.ve got my owls to watch. Any chance of an update on what we.ve missed today? Fish count and who got what?

  6. Elaine Ellor (Bathgate) says:

Thanks for the update, I’m sure you are all doing everything you can to restore our viewing. once again thank you

  7. Carolyn says:

Thanks for keeping us informed, Emma et al. What a shame – now go and enjoy your Friday evening and don’t worry about the cam.

  8. Margie says:

A few months ago I sent in a story I had written to your headquarters in Edinburgh. Never heard from them. The story is about a chick (called “The Osprey Chick”) and how he develops from egg to migration, with a bit of whimsical story thrown in about his adventures once he fledges. As I mentioned to the office, I would very much like to donate the story, and if any proceeds could come from it in your visitor’s center, the proceeds are all for the ospreys. If anything is in the works of being put together, perhaps you might contact them to get possesion of it.

  9. C Corner says:

No sweat. These things are sent to try us. C u tomorrow.

  10. Barbara Ann says:

Thanks Emma, Fiona and Rinchen, we all know you do your best, in fact above and beyond the call of duty.

  14. Ann from Poland says:

Many thanks to all Osprey Team, for your commitment and excellent work. I see that it is not just a job. You love what you do. My great respect for you. Thanks again .
The cam was running for a while . I just saw Our Lady in the nest. She was rolling the unhatched egg, and even for a moment she layed on it. Then she flew away.

    • Carolyn says:

Thanks for posting these really interesting images, Ann. Mum’s position in the third clip reminds me of the position they adopt when they’re scraping out a hollow in the nest prior to laying their eggs. I wonder if the team have seen this behaviour before?

      • Carolyn says:

I mean, of course, have they seen this behaviour at this stage in the life cycle.

      • Ann from Poland says:

Hi,Carolyn. I also thought about it. Perhaps it is empty nest syndrome? She deepened the cup of the nest, and very carefully turned the eggs. It was not cleaning the nest.

      • Ann from Poland says:

        * One egg, of course .

This is my first year of watching this nest, it is the first thing I turn on in the morning and leave it on all day to catch up as I pass my computer throughout the day. It is the most amazing wonderful spectacle I have ever had the pleasure of watching. I then have to email my friends who visited your centre this year with lots of questions, things I never knew they know and can answer my queries.
Thanks to all of you for all the wonderful work you are doing.

  16. Wendy Sanderson says:

This is the firt year that I have watched this nest. I now have computer on from first thinng in the morning until last thing at night so that I can catch up on the Osprey family throughout the day. It is one of the most wonderful and amazing things I have ever watched. I then have to email my friends Dave and Margaret Barlow (who visited your centre earlier this year) with the many questions I have had and they can answer all my queries.
Thankyou for all the wonderful work you are doing it is fantastic.

  17. MarjorieM says:

Thanks for letting us know. Will hope for better luck tomorrow!

  18. Jan(EC) says:

Just tried the cams and says connecting but goes back to ready, yet it was working late last night about 10.30. Strange…unless it is because there wasn’t a lot of people trying to access it then, are we overloading it?

    • Jan(EC) says:

In fact it was probably a little bit earlier than 10.30pm, and it was a strange sight as the bird that was in the nest was scraping with its feet backwards like a dog does.

I have never seen this action in the ospreys, is it normal team?

      • Carolyn says:

Jan, I was just saying to Ann (from Poland) that mum (I’m sure it was her) seemed to be displaying the nest scraping action which they use to prepare for egg laying. It’s almost as though she’s replicating the process of incubation in some kind of compensatory way, all alone in the dark at night, when she thinks no one’s looking!

  19. Cornelia Hanning says:

THIS IS FOR ‘May H’ !! you were asking about Ospreys in the Dumfries and Galloway area – just google Caerlaverock and then go to the menu on the left-hand side which brings you towards the bottom to their Osprey Diary. Hope that helps. Cheers, Cornelia

    • May H says:

      Thanks Cornelia

      • Cornelia Hanning says:

you’re very welcome, we plan to go – after years of unsuccessfully doing so – this winter, arrive with first light and leave after the geese are in for exactly that reason, Ospreys in the summer at LOTL and geese in the winter at C. Although the geese coming in from migration at Aberlady bay are a sight to be beheld as well…… oh the choices one has to make…….

  20. Sue says:

Hi all – I have a great picture on Cam1 again, but only jumping blue lines on cam2 – is it gone again?

    • rboardman says:

Sue, I have tried to reinvigorate cam 2 many times today, with no success. Everything was down here this morn due to an electricitry outage. Rinchen

      • Sue says:

Ok rinchen, thanks – I thought it was me! Great pic of 2 yelling youngsters on the nest on One at the moment. They really are beautful – a credit to the family.

  21. rboardman says:

Sue, they are beautiful, even with the microphone on! Rinchen
